Dear firsttimemom, You must see your doctor ASAP. Any type of coloured discharge is a worry and needs to be checked out. Don’t wait for your regular exam call and explain what your symptoms are and they will see you right away. There may be no problems but when any expectant mother sees a discharge it has to be checked out now. Sue…good luck

A brownish discharge from the vagina is usually “old blood” that is being pushed out of the uterus by the growing baby. If the fetal heartbeat is good, and there is no heavy bright red or dark red bleeding along with menstrual-like cramping, you usually do not have anything to worry about. We do not usually do too many pelvic exams as long as the cervix is closed, so as to avoid introducing infection to the vagina. A vaginal infection is usually greenish yellow, or frothy gray and has a fould smell or itches quite a lot. If the baby is growing adequately and the heartbeat remains positive, don’t worry. If you start to bleed heavily, with cramps, call your doctor. Heavy bleeding may indicate a miscarriage. By the way, it is quite rare for an abruption of the placenta to occur and it is doubtful that you will again have a problem when you get to term. Good Luck to you.
