Can cold medicine be given to kids?

Do you think that one can give cold medicines to kids below 6 years of age? There is so much going about them nowadays that I would avoid if possible.

Dear vhmehta, No…it is now recommended not to give cough medicine to anyone under 6. Who knows in a year they may say different but for now you err on the side of caution. Do not give it to anyone under 6. Sue…good luck

i would say avoid because i turned on the new today and it said to avoid cold medicines or something like that so check that out and by the way you can quote me on this but still i dont know all the info about it

Answer #4

You can but it is best to talk to your doctor. You will need to to figure out the dosage. With all that is going on with cough medicines I guess your don’t give them anymore. But allergy/cold meds for runny/stuffy noses, etc. they are safe. You just need dosage info since they only give out for kids over 6

Yes. My Mother gives my little brother Motrin and Tylenol She swears by it. They both reduce fever, and they really do work. There are many different versions of the two at your local pharmacy. Check them out I hope your children/child feels better ;]

In England it is a different story. There are medicines that are specially designed for babies and toddlers. One for example is “Calpol”. I had it as a child and I wish i still did… I loved it that much. It is ideal for younger children because of the taste, the spoon provided and the bottle top is protective. Instructions are easy to read… YOU MUST ALWAYS GO ALONG TO INSTRUCTIONS.

However some parents may not want to feed medicines to their child at a young age so I would recommend they have a pack of wet wipes or a spray bottle of antiseptic water which you spray on your hands and dry instantly. This kills off any germs that may be on the hand that could contain cold bacteria. It is ideal for grown ups too.

Answer #7

All the hype about the medicines for babies, toddlers and now children is because people/parents are “overdosing” the kids. My personal opinion…if you are a parent who knows the amount you need to give to your child by their WEIGHT…not AGE, then I say it’s fine. I’m no dr. but, this whole is thing is ridiculous; irresponsible parents are just going to start giving their SMALL kids meds for adults, then things are just going to get worse, it’s really sad.

Talk with your Dr - they can be easily over-dosed if not very careful…Take care !!
