Why does my cat nurse on things?

He started with my trying to nurse on my hair, which was ridiculous.. and now hes nursing on everything he can get his paws on.. it drives me nuts! Also, how can i stop it?? hes only 3 to 4 months old.

Answer #1

My cat did that same thing for a LONG time. He would suck on my nose, ears, fingers. I am pretty sure it has something to do with possibly being weaned too soon.

Answer #2

Usually it is because they have been taken from their mother too soon. Dogs also do that if you take them when they are under the recommended amount of weeks (generally around 8)

Awe man.. well now it confirms it.. i thought the person i got him from was lying about the age :/ now i have to deal with this emotionally disturbed cat! lol thanks you for the comments!

Leah, can you tell me how you got your cat to stop? cuz i swear the thing sneaks attack nursing on my hair when im sleepin haha

Answer #4

They often stop on their own. Ignore the behaviour. If you give him attention when he does it you are reenforcing this. It should then go away on it’s own eventually. Also what you could do is when he sucks on something distract him by giving him a toy and playing with him.

Yes, I agree with Irene. While at first I thought it was cute, it got to be very annoying. My family just ignored it and we pulled him away from whatever he was nursing on. He eventually stopped on his own (with little help from us by not letting him do it all the time)

Answer #6

awesome! thanks guys. and one more thing, i do reenforce it sometimes because sometimes when he is locked in my room and can hear ppl talking he meows forever and for a really long time, and my only thing to shut him up is to give him his little suckle blanket… i tried to just leave him meowing but its really annoying when friends are over and have there animals and he will just keep going on and on hah it drives me nuts because i timed it once.. and he went on for 24 minutes
