Can I study while on sick benefits?

I have been on income support for almost 15 mths due to deepression and an eating disorder and I don’t think I will not be coming off it anytime soon. I’m obviously unfit for work or studying at a public place such as college. but I was wondering if I could do some kind of course at home/on the net at home. would I be able to without it affecting my benefit? can you recomend any companies that offer this? preferrably free courses.

[I live in england, I’m 26yr and live alone]

I live in England too.. =]

Try learn direct. You can take courses online. You may have to go to your nearest learn direct building to sign up and everything but my mum used to do it and she found it great. You can communicate to your tutor online and they help guide you through your course.

Hope it helps and good luck =]

STELLA = thanks for the link and your support.

ALLOWISHOUS = ever heard of the phase “if you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all” ? you should remember that. how dare you judge me when you know nothing about me and my problems. I know a lot of people cliam sick when they could work, but that’s not me.

my dr signed me unfit for work…her idea…but I didn’t claim sick benefits until later. it was mths later my dr and therapist said I should claim money, cause I’m intitled to it. without my income support I couldn’t even pay for my anti-depressants let alone travel money to my app’s.

[btw I’m in england, not the usa]

I’ve been on varieous anti-depressants and have regular drs check-ups for the last 15 mth. I also had about 7 mths of seeing an eating disorder therapist every wk…and no I didn’t stop the app’s, I was only allow a limited amount of app’s. I’m now being reffered to the mental health team. so you can’t say I’m not trying to get better!

I didn’t say I will never get better, so that it wont be in the near future. even my dr would tell you that. it’s not just me own opinion.

if I’m so lazy then why am I even looking into doing a course from home! my intention was to get some qualifications for whn I do get back into work. I don’t know how I’ll cope with it, but at least I’m trying to do something with my time.

you said I’m young…according to your profile I’m 15 mth older than you!

as for dumb…you sound like a kid at school. I’m not even going to reply to that one.

I’d like to see you going through what I go through everyday and see how you would like it when people on here put you down.

would you be like this to someone with Schizophrenia or autism? no of course not…at least I hope you wouldn’t. I didn’t choose to be this way and I hate my life everyday. I don’t need someone who doesn’t understand my problems telling me what to do.

rant over.

I’m sorry but allowishous.. saying things like that is hardly going to make anything better. You don’t know her full story therefore please don’t judge. All she was asking for was advice on studying whilst on sick benefits. Come on.. please have a bit of consideration =/

But yes… geriann.. LearnDirect..

Go on www.learndirect.co.uk for more info =]

you are super retarded- get off your @&& and get a job/life/work ethic. your wasting peoples tax dollars because you think you look fat. Thats sofa * king stupid. Get over yourself, you just want attention.

Answer #6

OK so I may have been harsh with that, but come on!! The only reason I reacted that way is because people who are genuinely sick—WANT to get better. They dont look at their future and just decide that they’re definately not going to get well. Your question is an answer within itself. You can twist my words around all you want but you are getting advice. Everybody deals with life. It sucks but we do it. We don’t cut/ hide/ or claim ill so that we dont HAVE to deal. Your young, and dumb but you have several years ahead of you that you either make miserable or somewhat enjoyable like the rest of us. So come on champ- DO it To it!! ~Allowishousdelicious
