Can a brunette get a good blonde do?

I’m fifteen, and I’ve been dying my hair for years. Well, I started at roughly thirteen, and I enjoyed changing around the colour often every month(I’m naturally a medium-dark brunet); I’d go lighter brown with blonde highlights, and stuck with that for a while, then changed to red, and I actually went blonde at one point. But the salon did it terribly, and since I naturally have red tints in my hair(mother’s Irish), it ended up this fake-y, stupid yellow colour with red streaks and even some brown.

But I really just want to go a nice, golden blonde colour. Sort of like Kate Hudson, I suppose? Jessica Simpson? Slightly darker. I definitely don’t want to go bleach blonde or anything else gross like that.

Of course, every salon I’ve ever been to, the stylists have always made me chicken out. It’s very irritating. I figure, this time, if I really want to dye my hair blonde, I simply will. I now just fear that it’ll look strange with my light brown freckles, and dark brown eyebrows. I’m pale-skinned. I really want to do it, though.

Can I pull it off? Will it just look strange? Can a natural brunette end up looking good with blonde hair? Oh, and also, will it completely kill my hair texture? Yeah, I’m not stupid, I know you have to bleach your hair and then throw on all that colour. But my hair is actually really tough. It’s thick, and still soft, despite all the colouring I’ve put it through. At the moment, it’s a nice, light brownish-reddish colour. I have a trip next month and I’d love to be blonde for it.

Advice, please? =)

Hi,

OK, well the way I see it, you have two options.

  1. Just go to the salon and don’t let the stylist pressure you into anything.
  2. Do it yourself and if it looks bad, just dye it back :)

My best friend is naturally brunette, and she’s had her hair black, blonde and brown before. She looks great with all of them. It depends on the person, but some people can pull it off.

I have the exact same problem. Im part irish and have dark brown hair and eye brows. What I did first was buy some Sun-in (real cheap, under $10 at CVS or Wallgreens) and I would spray it all over my hair and on my eyebrows a little bit. Then go out in the sun for a couple hours. You can also just use a hair dryer on your hair after you spray it, but it doesn’t have the same results. The Sun-in will lighten your hair really fast until you get a real nice dirty blonde that doesn’t look fake. It doesn’t have a red tint to it like it does when I dye it. This has been the only solution I have come across that actaully works. good luck! =]

I too have dark, dark, dark brown hair and eyebrows almost black in certain lights. I have dyed my hair many times before and blond was a difficult color. While it looked great for 3-4 weeks my roots quickly became apparent after the 1st month and it gave a trashy look (not the classy, fun, blond I was previously enjoying) Also, the upkeep became VERY expensive. I loved being blond though! Especially because Britney Spears for a long time had dark eyes/brows with blond hair!! (lol, i am 21 and still love her)

So I warn you about 3 things:

1-the price versus the timeline of the blond hair 2-don’t dye your eye brows! Especially if you have dark brown eyes. 3-I agree, don’t let the stylist pressure you out of your dream hair color. When you call the salon ask for a color specialist and make an appointment for a ‘consultation’ By doing this you will know up front who will be coloring your hair, if he/she understands and can deliver what you want

Going to a salon for a simple dye job is a waste of money. It’s not that hard to mix 2 ingredients and apply. If you want blond, go to Sally’s Beauty Supply and get a bleach kit. If you can’t get the back of your head just have your mom do it.
