What are your opinions on crate training?

I have started crate training my puppy he no longer crys during the night and it has made it a lot easier to housebreak he no longer has accidents, I have had a lot of advice on how to do this but my mom and dad say its bad for the dog and is cruel what are you opinions on crate training, good or bad?

Answer #1

very good, I crate trained all my dogs, as long as they have enough room to turn around then its fine, dont leave them it in for too long because, yes that would be cruel. Dogs will not use the bathroom where they have to lay down. I support you 100% on this one! very good way to house train your animal, I was told to start this by my vet.

My family put my black lab in the crate at night for the first 2 weeks we had him, and he didn’t like it, so we stopped. But I will pay money to bet he is the best dog in the world. And I’m not just saying that. The first day we got him, my dad trained him not to bite. He has never bit since. He understands words. He jumped a 6 foot fence to go to the bathroom outside when it was accidently locked. Not to tell you my life story, but crate training isn’t the only way to get a respectful, obedient dog.

this is a great way to train a dog, this is there pesonal space. they don’t soil it because it is there “den” and in the wild they do not want pray to find there “den”. It also keeps the dog safe when no one is home.

Answer #4

The only thing about crate training a dog is that you have to make the dog not feel like the crate is a punishment and send him there like a time out chair for a young child. You just have to coax the dog into understanding that that is his space so that he enjoys it and doesn’t feel its a punishment or bad to be in the crate.

Answer #5

my dad crate trained his chocolate lab… and now he’s full grown and actually enjoys being in the crate. my dad’ll leave the crate door open and eventually the dog gets bored of being out with us and will go lay back into the crate. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. the only thing is, his dog is really lazy and fat, and oftentimes I feel bad for him because he’s in there all day and doesn’t get much attention during the day (not animal abuse… my dad and stepmom just had a baby so they keep busy). if you give the dog plenty of love and attention, there isn’t anything wrong with it, in my opinion.
