Building a motorcycle exhaust

I have built a different exhaust system for a Sportster. I wanted to illiminate the bulky look of the mufflers. As it is now,,it is just straight pipes. No mufflers or baffles. How can I make a baffle system for the pipes to keep the noise level in check? This is a newer model and has the fuel injection system, so once the system is complete it needs to be taken in and set up to adjust for the difference in pressure.

Most baffles I’ve seen are alternating openings going down the tube — So that the sound of the fuel explosions actually end up not being able to take a straight path out the pipe.

Picture looking down the tube a cylinder that’s half solid, and half with holes in it. Then that’s followed by another one that is reversed — the solid is on the other side.

When you’re looking down the end if it — you can’t see out the other end, but with no packing inside, you can probably see the light coming in the other end.

You should consider packing it with the material that’s in glass-packs as well…

What you’re looking to do is to remove the shockwave from the combustion explosion and the sound that goes with it.

If your tube is solid, no seams, then to space these baffles you can insert sleeves that give you the distance between each baffle for proper seperation.

Done right, I think you can accomplish your plan —

The only thing I see as a potential issue is that you’re making basically a skinny muffler and you might not have enough volumn inside the smaller diameter to get the noise levels down to legal and still keep the design you like. You may end up with a less bulky from the original, but still larger than a straight pipe.

Good luck!
