Both. The Earth is always rotating, so while it may be day where you are, it’s night on the other side of the world, and vice versa.

Night came first because night is the absence of light and in the vastness of space there is absence of light. It is only when you get within reasonable distance of a star that you receive light and can therefore perceive day.
