What are some good things and some bad things about Boys and Girl Scouts?

Why does it has to look like a military uniform and the badges? Why there are pledges and raising of the hand?. Seems like a cult to me.

Answer #1

you think it’s a cult? Seriously? I’m a girl guide and it’s not a cult.you learn basic skills which come in useful the ‘pledge’ is a promise and the promise is in 3 parts duty to God or to your religion; duty to your country; keeping the Guide Law. I promise to love my God,Serve the Queen and my country and to keep the Guide Law. We also discover and learn about Healthy Lifestyles, global awareness, celebrating diversity and discovery. We also put a HUGE amount of help/work into the community like remembrance day parades, community work ect ect.

In the UK the girl guides can also get awards like the Duke of Edinburgh award and the Queens Guide Award you can also get in touch with guides who are overseas.

Answer #2

Your mentioning of this God x2, is cult enough for me .

Answer #3

Obviously if you aren’t religious you don’t say ‘I promise to love my God’ if you are you say it. nothing ‘cult’ about it.

If it is a choice thing then i guess it is not cult style, but what if its a majority thing that all superior people there already say?kinda brain washes the non religious free nopt to say=result a cult thing?-the not religious wanting to be part of the group would become religious in order to 100%fit in,would be dodgy cult material stuff,i guess?

Answer #6

It really doesn’t Guides ect don’t focus on God it’s only that part we say god and in my group we don’t just have Christians. No way do we force people do force people to believe in god yes scouting/girl guiding has been criticise for it’s use of that religious oath. If it was a cult i doubt there would be around 1,000,000 members in the UK and over 7,500,000 members in the US

Answer #7

Thank you Lizzie. I know nothing about it, but mostly I don’t get the quasi militant uniforms with the chevrons and flags. Seems like all that would be missing are rifles. But again I am completely ignorant about it?? lol. I only seen people dress in the uniform while grocery shopping. In the UK? Do you sell girls scout cookies?

Answer #8

The man who started scouting was actually a British military officer called Robert Baden-Powell, the Uniform isn’t that strict he taught soldiers how to develop experience in stalking and fending for themselves, which would give them advantages as soldiers, so it does follow some sort of ‘military’ rule we still go out camping learning to put tents up ect ect. No we don’t sell girl scout cookies i think girl scouts is different from girl guiding yet similar in a lot of things.

Answer #9

So how do you raise funds in the UK?

Answer #10

We do jumble sales selling unwanted games ect of ours we also help the community and if they wish to donate money then they can and many local businesses actually support us and donate to us also :)
