If you want to succeed don’t join the Marines. I was in the Marines and is harder to go up in rank. Also of all the people I met in the Marines I’ve never met any marine that was happy about their decision of being in that branch and all of then were counting the years, months and days to the day they finally get out of the service.

I was in a combat field as an Assault Amphibian Vehicle driver and it was all males. There were no Women on that part of the base. It sucked.

It felt like being in Jail with a lot of men, well mostly 18-20 year olds high school drop outs, home sick and depressed and with raging hormones and the only thing to look forward to was to get drunk and get tatoos and show nobody that you are weak. If the rest of the men discover your weakness they will treat you like crap and you will get no respect and will be bullied on just like in school.

Most of the day is spent cleaning. Is not like you finish boot camp and you are done with being abused. No, that is just the start. From then on is waking up in the morning and go outside in the cold or heat to pick garbage. Something that they made us do a lot was to give us empty trash bags and go around the base and fill them up with cigarettes butts. I never smoked in my life and my fingers were yellow with all the tar from the cigarette butts.

Then you are done for the day but you have no privacy because you have to live in bunkbeds with all the other marines and put up with the nonsense and the noise. There is a lot of favoritism going on. Where the guy that gets to be the biggest brown noser and suck on the most to the guys with the higher rank gets better treatment and will advance in rank faster that way. If you are seeing as an outcast or have opinions of your own and show some individuality you can forget about going up in rank.

Something else I found messed up is that if you have a friend and he advances in rank faster than you then you are forbidden to be his buddy anymore. No matter how much of a friend he was, he will now have to treat you as a subordinate and he will have to make friends with guys his own rank and join then into treating you like crap. You cannot be seeing hanging out with him like before.

Find the service were there are the most women or pick a job that will have a lot of females.

You don’t know how much it suck to go to enlisted clubs on base that are 99% males.
