when you sign a record contract with any reputable label. you are hired on a “pay to play” basis. and if your starting off, chances are your going to have to sell the rights to your music you write.

people like Bettye LaVette used to never write songs. she just started a couple years ago. Ray Charles diddn’t write any of his hits. Elvis never wrote a thing till he “kinged” up.

all they care about is 2 things. 1- does it sound good. 2- is it profitable. wether you wrote it or some shlub from kentucky. dosn’t matter as long as thiers permission from the writer to use it.

song writers get their sings published. singers like george strait go to those publishers for songs. George Strait has only written like one or two songs in his whole 30 plus year career.
