Beer bellies?

Why are beer bellies so hard? My neighbor has one and I accidentally punched it and it was hard!

Answer #1

There are different kinds of fat.

Some fat we wear just beneath our skin. This is called subcutaneous fat.

Some fat is packed around our internal organs, This is called visceral fat.

The classic beer belly is a lot of visceral fat underneath our abdominal muscles. Beer bellies feel hard because you are feeling muscle.

It is believed that visceral fat is far more metabolically active than subcatenous fat and worse for us. Visceral fat is associated with heart dissease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Unfortunately visceral fat can also be more difficult to loose than its more benign cousin subcutaneous fat.
