To be autistic refers to having autism, or it could refer to a child with one of the autism spectrum disorders. Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, (basically it’s a disorder that lasts through out a person’s lifetime), and like Stephanie says, the kids have varying capabilities… All kids with ASD have some problems with reciprocal social interaction (trouble with joint attention, eye gaze, empathy etc), reciprocal communication /play (could have echolalia, scripted or repetitve language etc) and restricted & repetitive behaviors (fixation with routines, fixation with parts of objects etc). How each of these are displayed, or to what extent depends on the individual.
