AT&T Phone Upgrade?

I got a message from AT&T on my phone that I earned a phone upgrade, does this mean it’s free to upgrade or do I still have to pay to do so?

You usually get a phone upgrade after you’ve had a contract for a certain period of time (usually 2 years). When that happens you’re allowed to get a new phone for free so long as you extend your contract for another year or 2.
