Are consignment thrift shops evil businesses?

I’d like to know if consignment thrift shops are considered evil businesses? I mean, they seem to only prey on people who are too poor and or foolish enough to use their services, and on top of that, they take a huge percentage of the sale price. Wouldn’t you be better off having a garage sale or if you live in a city using craiglist, ebay or similar?

Answer #1

It’s for people who do not have time to have garage sales.

Answer #2

Well, they are in the business to make money, so of course, you will only get a percentage of the amount an item sells for…therefore, if you want to reap all the benefits for yourself, you would be further ahead to sell the item yourself.

Are they ‘evil businesses?’ Nope. I have purchased from consignment thrift shops and I have also sent items of my own to them to be sold. There is one particular shop close to my house which is filled with so-called ‘high end’ merchandise, including designer handbags, clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc., and as a buyer, I have gotten some fantastic deals. In fact, I recently purchased a stunning Coach handbag there in excellent condition for $40 - I saw one identical to it on ebay which sold for $270 - so ‘I’ got a terrific bargain, albeit the seller could have gotten much more for the bag on ebay.

In short, a ‘buyer’ can make out really well by going to consignment thrift shops, but if you, as a seller, want to make the bigger bucks, then I would definitely go the ebay route.

(Never used Craiglist, so I can’t offer any opinion on that.)
