What is alternative music?

Most of my music is labelled alternative but I don’t know what the alternative genre is. Please help!

usaully punk-rock music, music that doesnt fit into the mainstream.

Punk rock would be music that is either, punk,emo,or slow rock. Bands like 30 seconds to mars, nirvana, etc.

Music that’s different. NOT mainstream like Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber and so on. It can be any kind of music technically. ♥
