who can help me advise my sister?

so i overheard in passing my sister and her friend talking about shaving their arms. wouldnt be like shaving it grows back thicker and be more noticeable i told her to leave it be what do you think?

Answer #1

She should not do that. If she shaves her arms, she will have to shave them everyday, or every other day for the rest of her life. Because if she doesn’t, and she lets it grow back out…it is going to be much thicker and darker than before. She will regret it if she does. I know, because I shaved areas I shouldn’t have. Now I have to continuously shave it. I regret it, and wish I never started doing it.

Answer #2

actually, shaving doesnt cause hair to grow back thicker, its just a myth. It does give you stubble though which isnt very nice. I dont think its very common for girls to have their arms. If they were going to do anything, I think bleaching the hair would be the way to go.

Answer #3

Well the areas I shaved have grown back a lot thicker, darker, and noticeable than before I shaved it. The hairs are very course, and now, two hairs are even growing out of each pore.

Answer #4

the most it can do is make the hair appear more coarse because of the bluntness of the cut hair. It doesnt change the amount of hair follicles and therefore cannot cause more hair to grow

Answer #5

Your hair does not grow back thicker when you shave. Shaving does not cause hair to grow back faster, darker, or coarser either. It’s just another urban legend. It’s been clinically proven. Shaving has no effect on the part of the hair shaft below the skin surface, which is where growth and pigmentation occur.

Although the hair may seem to grow faster after shaving, this is just an illusion. Likewise, the blunt, stubbly ends of new growth can give the illusion of darker, coarser hair, whilst in reality, it is not.

It’s up to your sister really. But, to be honest, it’s just a pain to have to keep doing.

Answer #6

Well, when I say the hair grows thicker, I don’t mean that more hair grows. I mean the actual hair appears thicker when it grows back. Before I shaved an area, the hair was thin, so it wasn’t jet black, it looked more gray. After I shaved it a while, and let it grow back, the hairs appear jet black, and course.

Answer #7

It’s probably more psychological more than anything to be honest. It has been clinically proven that shaving has no such effect on the hairs. :)

Answer #8

No, it is not psychological. It is not in my head. It feels different, looks different, and it is different…than before I shaved. Which is why I have to continue to shave it. The hair is much more noticeable that before.

Answer #10

I have been shaving my arms for the last few years, it is a bit of a pain as it looks a bit strange as it grows back!! Despite this I wouldnt stop, I love the smooth, hair free effect it gives. Maybe i get away with it because I have very fine fair hair.

Tell her if she really wants to give it a go, you can always stop and grow it back, (or wax, or use cream)!

Answer #11

From personal experience shaving with a blade makes regrowth feel thicker, shaving with a electric shaver seems less thich, or more soft, and waxing seems to be the best option, although more painful. Generally leaving body hair alone will let it stay soft and less stimulated to grow faster.

Answer #12

The reason it looks and feels more coarse is because you’re cutting the hair in the middle of the actual hair. Imagine cutting a cucumber in half. The newly cut end, which was the middle, will be considerably thicker than the original end. Hair is not the same thickness all the way through. When it grows naturally, the end is tapered with it being thicker at the base. Cutting it in the middle will make it appear to be thicker and darker once it starts growing out, even though it is not actually so. If it did you could imagine that people with thinning hair would use this remedy!
