About my jeep wrangler ( gas gauge )

My gas gauge has seemed to stop working I had half a tank of gas the night I parked it got up and noticed ( while driving >.<) that it said completely empty. Thing is I went a long ways so no, no one took the gas out of my jeep considering I went to work and back and it takes a half an hour both ways. So my question…

Does any one know what may be up, my dad and I thought it may be the conections some where but cant find it. I dont really know where to look for it. And I dont really know what to search online to tell me. I beleive its an 87 (year) It started working a little bit then stoped again today. Its been like this for 2 days, could get bad

Er… Im no mechanic but last time this happened to my dad. we dropped the gas tank and fixed the float that relates to the gas gauge, Maybe it got knocked out of place somehow… But then again that was a truck, But gas tanks are gas tanks right?

Answer #2

Emeruby, this is correct. If you bring it to a garage to fix it, they’ll probably want to replace the gas tank too, to make more money. Don’t worry about it, as long as it runs, and you can keep track of how far you drive before running out of gas (don’t do it often, it isn’t good for the fuel filter) then you should be alright.
