I never actually owned one. My parent’s sterio has an 8-track player but I don’t know if it still works. My older brothers had 8-track players in their cars but by the time I owned my first car they were replaced by cassette tapes.

My most vivid memory of them was the loud KA-CHUNK-A sound they made when they changed tracks (usually in the middle of a song).
