When is the right time to have your dog euthanized?

Our dog is 15 years old, so she’s no puppy, but for that last few months she’s been confused, she falls down a lot, wets herself in her sleep, and has seizures. One would obviously say it’s time to put her down.

The problem is - she’s still so happy all the time, and it’s making us second guess things. We love her dearly and don’t want her to suffer, but her sweet and playful personality is getting in the way of logical choice.

I know we’ll have to put her down … but is now the time?

Answer #1

Our rule is when the dog is in any type of pain that cannot be healed we put them down. But it should be your call. If she cannot continue anymore then maybe you should consider it.

Answer #2

It is a tough call to make as we will be facing the same thing soon. When the quality of life for the dog becomes obviously bad enough and you feel sorry for her I think you will just know it’s time. It’s a terrible feeling to have to do it, but when you think about it, it’s an act of love if she is suffering.

Answer #3

Theres different criteria for Euthanasia, in some cases that can’t be reversed.. we must realize that sometimes we have to love our pets enough to let them go..

Answer #4

If she can still run and feel fine then I’d personally say keep her. That’s hard to decide being her age though.

Answer #5

If your dog’s life has become difficult enough to make him/her unable to move around much, it’s probably in a lot of pain. I know it’s hard, but I don’t think animals have the same fear of impending death as humans. I know you’ll miss you companion, but pain is difficult to manage.

Answer #6

For me , the time to put a dog down is when the vet tells us that they will have to be on d.ruggs or have a surgery or kemo. (when they are an old dog) . Or when the dog is in a lot of pain ….

Answer #7

If she is happy let her live her life a bit longer but if you notice she is in pain then i would let her go. I am so sorry my dog is very old to and i don’t know what i will do with myself once she passes. But you need to do whats best for the dog though because she may be happier put out of pain(if she does have pain) and into doggie heaven.

Answer #9

It depends on the quality of their life! If you guys are able to manage her needs and she’s happy keep her alive!

Dogs get old just like us! When your 80 I be you’ll be confused, pee yourself, and you’ll need a walker or you’ll probably fall down!!! But that doesn’t mean they don’t want to live.

If you do decide to keep her around and have any questions about her care feel free to ask me anytime!

Answer #10

what if the pain could be managed or treated??? would you still put them down???

Answer #11

No, If it could be managed very well i.e. without the dog being in constant pain I probably wouldn’t put them down.

Answer #12

I think the best way to find out is just to take her to the vet and ask them about it. They’ll know whats best for her :)
