Do you think Roger Ebert crossed the line with his poor-taste tweet about Ryan Dunn's death?

For anyone who doesn’t already know, Roger Ebert tweeted the comment “Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive”, only hours after news of Dunn’s death became public.

Answer #1

Yes, he crossed the line. It could have been more sympathetic at the time when Ryan Dunn’s family and many people are mourning his death.

Answer #2

Oh yea he crossed it alright. Death is a hgorrible thing and should not be a laughing matter. Nobody is perfect. Who is Roger to be judging and talkin bad about someone. He is nothin more than a fuk up like all of us. That just makes him look like a douche

Answer #3

I don’t think that the tweet itself was wrong. It was the truth. Simple as that. People should be able to say the truth. But they should also consider the feelings of others, before saying it. Yes, Ryan Dunn drove that car after drinking too much. And yes, maybe people should have taken his car keys away after all those drinks. But you don’t bluntly say that when everyone is shocked and still struggling to figure out what happened. I think he picked the wrong time for saying the truth. That’s why it sounded so cruel. You don’t want to hear or read the truth so shortly after losing someone you loved or admired. He should have waited a week or two before twittering that. Or at least a couple of days. No one would have cared about the tweet then.

Answer #4

Definitely. I don’t see how anyone with a conscience could bash someone like that. Anyone who knows of Ryan knows that he never intended to hurt anyone, and for Ebert to run his mouth when Ryan’s friends, family, and fans are devastated over his death was just plain wrong. Whether it was the truth or not, that was totally cold-hearted. It’s not Ebert’s place to say anything like that. What’s done is done… no need to drop salt now.

Answer #5

Oh yeah, and I said some mean things to him on my facebook for it, not that he will ever see it, but still.

Answer #6

I think it would have been much better had he left the word “Jackass” out of it. I’m not sure if he was trying to be witty, or just trying to prove a point. What he said was absolutely true, but one can insinuate that he was flat out calling Dunn a jackass for doing such a thing. I doubt that’s where he was going with this statement, but I’m pretty sure there is someone out there with that idea planted in their mind. Personally, I don’t feel as though Ebert has crossed a line. Yes, what happened is very sad, but I can understand why people would be upset. I’m just not a very sensitive person when it comes to these matters. Dunn was a jackass for choosing to drive drunk, and the death of two people was the result of his decision!

Answer #7

Yes, I do think that it was a little bit insensitive only hours after the accident. Though some people do need to remember that Ryan did drink drive, and kill himself and his passenger. Just because he is a ‘celebrity’ -for want of a better word- doesn’t mean we should all be treating him like a fallen king or something. Some of the tweets/posts/status’ I’ve read lately are putting him on a throne and blaming society for what happened. Famous or not, his poor thinking has killed somebody, and torn apart many families. If he was some idiot in the newspaper we would all be tisking and tutting but just because he is famous, everybody finds other things to blame for what happened.
