Do you think he could be trying to ask me out soon?

I’ve been friends with this guy for like two weeks now and we’ve talked a whole lot. I’m not going to go into everything since it’s a lot of info but basically I know he likes me too cause his friend told me and I did hear once that he’s planning on asking me out but I don’t know for sure. Just today he invited me to have lunch with him then later walked me to my locker and walked me all the way to my next class. It felt like we were dating sort of. He even helped me with my stuff and was being a real gentleman kind of like a guy would do for his girlfriend. I want him to ask me already since it’s the last week of the semester and because I have no idea how I’d be in touch with him over Christmas break since he said once that he doesn’t have a working phone. Do you think he could be trying to work up the courage? I do flirt with him a lot and I do give him that kind of encouragement so he can’t be that nervous and we have gotten to know each other better lately. Do you think I should tell him I like him myself if for some reason he doesn’t get to it?
