What would you think if the internet all of a sudden was censored and limited even banned?

like it is in the east and or started to have a form of government or one body governing it.. scary.. so far with obvious exceptions we are able to see our own personal perception of what the internet is to us, but what if that was to change?

Answer #1

maybe that would be good. to ban some websites. for instance, facebook. yes, its a good place to catch up with friends. but there are weirdos on facebook. internet is good for some reasons and bad for some reasons. there are ups and downs, who knows if there is more ups or more downs, everyone has their own opinions

Answer #2

California and the US federal government both have too many services that are only available online that would prevent them from closing it down. Also, considering that they send people to try to ‘Open’ the internet elsewhere…it simply wouldn’t happen.

However, expect more tracking, analysis and investigation into what every individual does online by the government, as they have yet to repeal the Patriot Act, b/c our government can’t help it…as it’s essentially too good an opportunity to keep an eye on us.

Answer #3

oh for real, completely agree… was just hoping to get some conversation going about it… i was in my kitchen cooking and i had this flash thought is the internet the equivalent to being in international waters? lol.. censorship affects everyone.. In fact the first thing i could think they might do is change the pricing for accessing it at some point.. would be another way to tap into that unfair advantage.. I mean we already deal with that through our ISP..

Answer #4

We already have the separate internet in Russia (I forget the name off hand…) and in many ways, you can consider the Chinese internet separate, as well as (most) of what happens in Iran.

And if you read the debates about net nuetrality…ISP’s have been pushing to regulate and or charge web sites more if they are more popular to be served the same speed as others…and the fact that it’s NOT illegal to do so per se is pretty scary.

Answer #5

It would never work, they would ban a website and the creators would just make another one in 5 minutes. There’s no way to get rid of all the weirdos and inappropriate stuff online, the internet is much to big and vast to have any kind of screening or filtering.

Answer #6

PRAISE THE LORDD! PRAISEE IT! HOLLALUU YA!

Answer #7

websites unfortunately are banned constantly, most often for what is considered internet piracy in the way of music, movies and assorted medias.. not for content but content infringement.. the true owners do not always have the resources to just fire up another website my example im using was ninjavideo..

Answer #8

Youtube wasn’t banned over piracy in many places, it was banned due to religious fundamentalism.

Same with other sites…:)

Answer #9

Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act

Ironically the PDF of this bill requires a password to view.

“The legislation says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines or software firms that the US Government selects “shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed” by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined,” ZDNet’s Declan McCullagh Although Senate Bill 3480 was introduced by Joe Lieberman… Sen. Jay Rockefellar first proposed a need for a cybersecurity bill in the spring of 2009… after asking the question, “Would it had been better if we’d have never invented the Internet?” I’ll leave it to others to debate the logistical feasibility of the act. My understanding is that it allows the executive to commandeer ISPs at its discretion once a “cyber emergency” is declared. Perhaps the full passage of the bill awaits a lame duck congressional session.
