Here is a quote by a Swedish philosopher, what do you think of it?

It’s horrible to see a child whose life is ruined because of an operation that cost $20, but if you operate the child then they live a little bit better but in the same situation which produced them. The real aim is to try and reconstruct society on such a basis that poverty will be impossible.

Answer #1

I think it’s a grammatical train wreck - are you sure this is the exact quote?

Answer #2

He is swedish, so english is not exactly his first language…

Answer #3

The quote doesnt seem that special to me. First it seems like hes just using “a poor little childs” handicap and misfortune to catch your attention and make you have sympathy, then he just states that poverty is bad and even if the kid is well again hes still living in poverty. Its not a very powerful quote and not that interesting.

Answer #4

I think its a lovely thought. I also think that the day there is no poverty is the day there are no more humans.

Answer #5

When someone says that pretty much all charity work is useless its a lovely thought?

Answer #6

No, the thought that society could somehow be poverty free is a lovely thought. I didn’t take away that charity work is useless from this statement. He clearly says that the child will live a little better. I thought he was saying that it is imperative that we all look at the bigger picture and try to even out the socioeconomic stratification in our society.

Answer #7

I think that it’s kind of like a “give him a fish, feed him for a day; teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime.” sort of concept.

It also makes me wonder if the philosopher practiced what he preached.
