How To Choose The Right Cabinets For Your Kitchen

Whether you’re building your dream home or updating your current one, choosing new kitchen cabinets can be such a hard decision. After all, the kitchen is one of the most expensive rooms of the house to build (along with the bathroom), so any mistakes can be costly. You need to ensure that the space works efficiently for you, no matter how you intend to use it.

In this article, we have shared 6 of our top tips for choosing the right cabinets to help you avoid any slip-ups:

  • Choose the door profile first
As the cabinet doors will be the most visible design elements in your whole kitchen, it is one of the more important decisions. A great way to narrow down on your choice of door is to start with their profile – popular ones include recessed mitre, raised arch, recessed square and slab. If you want a modern look, go for slab.

  • Choose the door style next
A lot of times, this is easily narrowed down by budget. It’s a good idea to actually go to the store to see some samples – take photos of your top 3 or 4 styles. Don’t go back to the samples, otherwise you’ll confuse yourself. When you get home, look back through the photos and delete any that you don’t love. This should leave you with your stop choice.

  • Choose your wood type and colour
Most of us probably already know what our dream cabinet colour and finish is. Cabinets can be built from a variety of timber species, so if you don’t know what one you should use be sure to speak with your designer for recommendations. The colour is a completely personal preference – you could opt for paint or even a stain.

  • Think about function and beauty
Keep in mind that you are the chef, the baker and even the cleaner in your kitchen, so you will know best what works for you. You will need to decide where you want shelving, where you cupboards and where you want drawers. You should also consider the hardware used – soft close is a great option, which prevents slamming.

  • Organisation is important
Having an organised kitchen is incredibly important. Think about how you use the space the most and how it will need to function as time goes on (and your family grows and/or changes). With so many organisational options to choose from, such as utensil pull outs and wall messaging centres, you’ll be able to find the perfect solution.

  • Maximise every inch
Finally, you will want to maximise every inch of your kitchen. A great place to achieve this is your island bench. Do you want some barstools to turn it into a breakfast bar, or do you want the whole thing to be reserved for cabinet storage? Another area whose space you can maximise in the space behind the baseboards.

As you can see, choosing the right cabinets for your kitchen involves a lot more than simply walking into a store and pointing at something that looks okay. We hope that the tips we’ve shared here have helped you to make the very best choices for your kitchen – from your specific needs to the décor you have ultimately decided on. The end result will be more than worth it!
