How many carbs should take in a day?

Alright, so I’m not really a vegetarian but I’m cracked out on vegetables, I eat salads all the time and am not really a fan of dressing so usually I eat them plain (yeah I know I’m weird). I don’t really eat much bread but I do eat sliced deli meat like turkey and ham but usually just roll it up in cheese. I eat a decent bit of fruit to.. I don’t really like overly salty or overly sweet foods or greasy foods either. I have kind of a weak stomach so stuff like that usually upsets it. Anyways what I’m getting at is I read online that you should take in about 250 carbs a day, from what I can pretty much calculate from my daily intake of food I only get around 200 a day or so, sometimes a little more then that but on average around 200. Is that bad? Should I eat more carbohydrate rich foods or is 250 just a recommended number and is it actually safe to eat a little less then that? I’m 19, 6’1”, skinny as hell (I use to eat unhealthy and was the same way, fast metabolism and all) and not unhealthy skinny just like 147 and a little over 6 foot tall, and generally I just tend to eat healthy, not because of any particular reason, I’ve just become partial to health foods. Just wondering if the way I’m eating could be dangerous for my body?

Your age, height and weight suggest that your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is 1780 cal. per day. This means that if you spent all day in bed doing nothing, you would still need to eat 1780 cal per day to maintain your basic life functions at your current weight. On top of that you probably expend around 900 cal per day via your various activities - in which case you would need to consume 2680 cal per day just to maintain your current weight. . The best recommendations for a healthy diet suggest that about 50% of your daily calorie intake should be obtained from (mainly “slow” / “complex) carbohydrates so I recommend that you obtain around 1300 to 1400 calories per day from carbohydrates mainly from things such as rice, pasta, potatoes, wholemeal bread, and bananas. . In order to gain weight at a rate of 1 pound per week of muscle you would have to eat at least a further 4000 calories per week extra (ie about 600 extra calories per day - totalling around 3300 cal per day - of which around 1650 cal. should be from carbohydrates) .

Could you give me the web site to were you found this information? Id like to see how much calories I should be eating.

Answer #5

I did not find it on a website - it is information that I am familiar with and that I calculate using accepted nutritional formulae. I can calculate your BMR from your gender, age, height and weight. Further information is based on the calorific values of lean muscle tissue, and in some circumstances I would similarly use the calorific value of adipose tissue (fat).
