Do you think that it is inappriate to have a section on assisted suicide in a middle school library?

I found a section on assisted suicide In my school’s library. There is a slightly funny part though, it was right next to nuclear power. Funny or not, do you think it’s wrong? We have 10 year olds reading books in the library!!!

Answer #1

No I do not think it is inappropriate. I think it is desirable for children (even as young as 10) to be given the opportunity to consider death in general as a natural consequence of living, and also the specific morality issues surrounding euthanasia.

Children should not be wrapped up in cotton wool and shielded from the harsh realities of life. By 10 they are well past the nursery rhyming fairy tales of infancy, or if not, they should be. .

Answer #2

cause this is in a middle school and it was kinda shocking cause they try to be really careful what we see and hear

Answer #3

I am sure that they were careful in considering whether this material was appropriate or not and came to the conclusion that it was appropriate. Many contentious issues are covered as part of middle school curriculum and I don’t think that assisted suicide is any less than the issues of sex education or evolution or religion. You can not be educated without being allowed to think about and gain an understanding of the occasional difficult moral issue.

Answer #4

good point, the thing that makes me nervous is that my friend didn’t have the whole sex ed talk until she was almost 13.
