Paranoid when home alone

I’m 16 years old. So this is kind of embarrassing. But here it is. I hate being home alone. Especially at night. I have to go through the house checking if the doors are locked. Then I have to look in my closet sometimes because it’s pretty big and I think people might have gone into my house and hid in there. Then I look in some more places that people could hide. Once I lay down and close my eyes, I keep picturing someone coming up to the side of my bed and stabbing me to death and killing my family. So I get up and look around some more. Every night it takes me about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to fall asleep because I’m so freaked out. How can I get over being so paranoid about people breaking into my house?

I know exactly how you feel. in fact you are describing EXACTLY how I feel sometimes. watch funny happy films before you go to bed, and have the radio on as you fall asleep, it really helps. just take deep breaths and try as hard as possible to block out those thoughts.

hope I helped xxx

being afraid of the dark is what keeps most of us alive.being ready is what makes most things that go bump in the night stay in the night.its ok to be afraid but use it to your advantage .if you panic like you described ull be useless wheather you know whats coming or not.take up a martial art self defense class.identify where all objects in your home can be used to your advantage like weapons.identify an escape route just like for fire.beef up home security and buy a big dog.basically make anybody sorry they tried in every aspect of the word

you live in Tennessee…is home invasion even a reality in that state? other than telling yourself there’s nothing to fear, there isn’t much you can do. you have an irrational fear, so rational answers aren’t going to help. try depriving yourself of sleep, so when it’s bedtime, you’re just so dead tired that you don’t WANT to look for intruders. you’re so tired, you don’t even care if they kill you. maybe that’ll build a habit you can keep with you. best of luck…live the dream.

That’s all psychological, and don’t worry, you’re not the only one going through it ! There are plenty of people that live with feelings such as yours. Don’t worry, eventually you’ll realize you’re home is where you’re safe. What you can do, though, maybe to help you out is check your house while everyone is STILL home, and maybe even lock the door YOURSELF, so you can remind yourself later that no one can get in because you locked it YOURSELF.

just a thought =)

but don’t worry sweetie, you’re not the only one ! it’s nothing to be embarrassed about !
