Soup, soup, soup. 10 bucks worth of veggies and broth makes 8 to 10 servings of soup. Spinach soup, leek soup, butternut squash soup, pea soup, oxtail stew – soup is ridiculously cheap and has limitless creative possibilities. Yeah, I make a lot of soup.

Answer #7

mikeh is right on the money…You can make soup to feed yourselves for a week with $25 to $30…Bean Soup (white beans, brown beans, black beans…smoked pork and fresh pork), Vegetable Soup, Pea Soup, French Market Soup, Lentil Soup…all make great nutricious meals for little money…

You can buy one bone-in ham…use the “pretty” slices for a big batch of scalloped potatoes and ham, and a couple of breakfasts…then use the meat that’s left on the bone and the bone for a kettle of bean soup…you get a lot of bang for your buck.

You can get a lot of soup out of one turkey, too…

Ramen noodles are cheap and filling. When I was in college I could get a dozen packages for a buck. Now they are more like 2 for a dollar but they are still cheap food.

Boxed macaroni & cheese dinners are hard to beat in cheapness. I actually used to like the cheap store brands better than Kraft. You don’t need to use as much butter or margarine as the package says if you want it to be cheaper and less fattening.

Bulk rice and dry beans are your cheapest calories and are healthier than pasta but they take a little time to cook. Baked potatoes are another cheap meal.
