Female betta fish

Hi. I have a female betta fish who has a big belly, a horizontal stripe on both sides which is grey in colour. She has a little bit of trouble swimming and sleeps vertically sometimes. Is she fat or pregnant? Is she sick? If she is sick, what is she sick from and how do I treat it? Do you have any pictures of pregnant betta fish that I could look at?

Answer #1

Your fish has something called ‘swim bladder disorder’. This is when the swim bladder that lets the fish know when it is right side up, has not developed properly. It can also occur from over feeding. Being that you are saying she looks pregnant you are most likely over feeding her! To treat this you need to fast her for about three days. After that she should start feeling a little better. After this you need to feed her around 4 or 5 betta pellets or a veryyy small pinch of flakes twice a day and that is it! Their stomach is only about the size of their eye and this is all they need. Good luck.

There is no such thing as a pregant fish; fish lay eggs. She is most likely sick, which would be difficult to treat because it is a small fish.
