How old you have to be to get custody of a younger sibling in California?

My younger twin sisters are two almost three and I’m nineteen…There parents are unstable and their mom has three other kids under 6, 4,and three to take care of…My dad is asking me to put them in my name for moneys sake but i work so i dont know how that’d work out..Long story short I want them nomatter how much it’d cost me to care for them and i’m sure m,y mom will help me when or if i need her too….Any advice about what i should do or rights i have would be appreciated…Thanks…

You are over 18 so it is possible, It might be tough convincing the court that you are able to take care of them since you are so young. I would start by going to your local city hall and asking for guidance. Good luck!! I hope it works out for you

I do not know about the law, but I would think you would need to start by proving your parents or parent (if they are still living) unfit. There must be a reason that you want to gain custody. Either they are not being taken care of properly, or there has been a death or absence of your/their parents. I would think that as long as you can prove they would be better off in your care, meaning you can prove that you can take better care of them than who they are with, by providing stable housing, food, care, daycare, medical et, even if you need government assistance to do so, that your age would not be an issue. Good luck, and I admire you for wanting to take care of them like that. I took on 3 kids when I was only 19, it wasn’t always easy, but I am 36 now and I never regretted it.

I would research your state guidelines on the subject top to bottom. If your unsure of the red tape….maybe vesting in a consultation with a lawyer beforehand. There are pro bono lawyers who may be able to advise you at little to no cost on what to expect and how to prepare in what’s expected or that a judge would address in considerations.
