  You can get thick plastic guards that you attach to the couch where they scratch...sometimes, even when you give them scratching posts and everything, they still do it. You can also trim their nails a little bit, so they aren't as sharp.

  It's impossible to stop them, unless you train them to use a scratch guard that you may/ should have bought for them. My cats use our couch seeing we have no guard, but they're trained.

  i agree with the other post, citrus does work but you could also try making sure that there is a scratch post available.

  Cats hate Citrus. Just for a few days tape an orange or lemon peel where you want the cat to stop scratching.
