If I take a baby bird out of its nest, will the parents attack it when I return it?

I just discovered I have a baby lovebird (1 day old) can you take it out of the cage with parent’s and then put it back in the nest or will they attack it?

Answer #1

Oh wow congrats. The general rule with baby birds is that the parents may disown it if it smells like human (from picking it up or touching it). I’d leave it in the cage with the parents, they know what to do.

Thank you for your awnser, this is my first time and any help would be great! There is so much on the internet but it doesn’t seem to help too much? Right now it must be eating or something it kind of sounds like a squirell, it doesn’t chirp yet like I’ve seen on utube. I really hope they make it cuz mommy is a real crazy bird right now she is mean as hell when breeding. Again Thank you

That’s okay, you don’t need to do much as the mum and dad birds will have their instincts when caring for the baby/babies.

Answer #4

Actually, that is not true. Birds don’t have a strong sense of smell, and wouldn’t be able to notice our scent. Even if they knew a human handled their young, it is very, very rare for them to leave their nest; and that is in the wild. The last part of your advice is still really good though. :) However, she should just leave them alone while they’re so fragile. My lovebirds had babies as well, I think I waited a week before I felt comfortable touching them. Be warned though, the mother won’t like you touching them and may bite even if she is normally a nice bird.
