What does 'kcal' mean?

I realised that when it comes to how many calories are in things, it says stuff like ‘168 kcal’

What does the ‘k’ mean? At first I thought ‘kilo’ but it’s ridiculous because I highly doubt theres 168000 calories in a bag of crisps lol :)

Anyone care to tell me?

Answer #1

It DOES mean kilo calories, your confusion is understandable. In science, a calorie is an amount of energy, but it is very tiny, so when you talk about the energy in food, they say kilo calorie, kcal., or sometimes spell it with a capital ‘C’.

PS - I know this is a simplification

Answer #2
