Yes, you should thaw it first, but NEVER in lukewarm water - this will cause bacteria to breed at an extremely rapid rate.
There are a few safe ways to thaw your ham:
- Overnight in the refrigerator (recommended)
- In cold running water (the water must be running so it maintains the cold temperature)
- In the microwave (only recommended if you will be cooking it immediately after thawing)
You have to be very careful how you thaw your foods, bacteria thrive in warm conditions and it could end up being much worse than an upset stomach afterwards - you can kill people with food!
