Puppy 5 months old

How long does it take to train a puppy to come, no matter what the distraction

Answer #1

5 seconds. Here puppy, puppy! Works for my puppy every time!

Answer #2

Rembering the question was “how long does it take” NOT “how to do it”

I use a long line…that’s a nylon rope, 3/8’s to 5/8 thickness (think thin)…25 to 30 feet long. You can get a little snap to hook to the end at any Farm or Hardware store…I tie knots in it every 12 to 18 inches so that I can step on it if the dog does get distracted and is going to take off.

Keep in mind EVERYTHING you teach a dog is a building block…one thing built upon the next. To teach them to come, I teach them to sit, down and stay first…teaching to stay is harder because they want to follow you. If you need help in teaching to stay, let me know…as it’s in small increments also.

Put your dog in a down/stay…(you’re got your long line in your hand)…walk away 5 feet…give the come command using his name…say it happy, and excited…clap your hands, or open your arms like you would to a child…you can give him a little help by tugging the rope…do that a couple times…then move 10 feet away…then 15…till you hit the end of your long line. Always praise BIG (you can even use a little treat in the beginning)…In the safety of your yard, walk around with him dragging the long line…at intervals, call him to you…if you can’t get his attention, give that line a tug…then again, PRAISE big…Do this only for 10 or 15 minutes at a time, 3 or 4 times a day…

Learning to come consistantly…especially with distractions takes time…and puppies are easily distracted…that long line will be your best friend for up to a year…depending on the dog. It’s practice and consistancy that eventually make the dog not give a second thought about following your command…

Here’s another tidbit…that is the frosting on the cake…NEVER under any circustances show that you’re pissed because they didn’t come…even if you only get 2 feet away from them before they turn to come…grit your teeth, smile and say GOOOD BOY! That’s part of the consistancy…if he came 2 feet, then he did come…maybe not fast enough…but he did it. Anger once the dog is in your hands, is a great reason for making a dog “decide” that coming is a bad idea.

It depends on the breed, the relationship with the dog and the perciverance.

The key is really perseverance. Repetition will learn the dog right from wrong- especially if treats are given for good things and being put outside and for bad things.

It could take up to a year but if you try your hardest you may find he is well trained a couple of months.
