Pregnant pup advice

LuLu is a muggin and I was told that she is on about day 47-49 now, all of the articles I’ve read say that you shouldn’t see or feel puppies in belly yet, we can. It is very obvious. While it is very exciting, I’m a little worried that maybe the vet is wrong about her due date. What’s the likelyhood that he is wrong? Could this just be due to a large litter? I didn’t want to have an xray or ultra sound because she is very untrusting of people as it is, but now I’m having second thoughts. Anyone have the answer?

Answer #1

Puppies arrived this afternoon and all are well, actually just wonderful! Thanks for reassuring me!

I would just look up your breed of dog on line and read up on it..I’m sure it will vary…Because in pugs it is common for them to need C sections, thats the only reason I had an xray with her so I could have an idea of what to expect…this was her 1st liter too so I didnt know how she would be. Her xray showed 5 pups and she had6. Thought she was done when that evening she had 5 but 9 1/2 hrs later the next morning here comes #6. And on line in all my reading an average for pugs was 3-4, so 6 was a huge liter I guess for her, but it varies. It will vary each time on how many and bigger breeds usually have more in a liter than little breeds, but the amounts may never be the same..you never know…I had a friend with a retriever who on her 1st liter had 14 pups , 2nd liter 7, 3rd liter 9, so you never know…

Thanks puglover, that makes me feel better about not getting the xray, I guess we’ll just keep an eye on her and hope for the best!

Answer #4

Okay, 1 more question, on average anyone know how many pups to expect without an ultrasound?

Answer #5

an xray will just tell you how many pups to expect, but they arent always 100% accurate to a T, but give you an idea..I had one with my pug… The vet can only go by the info you give them…pregnancy is about 63 days from the time the male and female tied(mated) the 1st time.
