What would cause a placenta to grow large, but the fetus to remain small?

A women I work with had a ultra sound yesterday, she has been referred to uva hospital. Her placenta is growing really big and the baby is not, anyone heard of this or know what may become of it. Her appoitment is not until tuesday. Thanks

Perhaps it’s Intrauterine Growth Restriction, but I’m not entirely sure the enlarged placenta has anything to do with that.

The doctors are most likely going to run some tests, but if they had an immediate concern, she would have been hospitalized.
