Is pocket money neccesary?

something that I’m curious to know is that is necessary for a parent to give his or her child pocket money if it why;and how much do you think is too much to give the child. saying a child is still at school and still under parent’s hands and do you think they use this money for good reasons I know they may be given money for lunch but are they using it for that.

Whether they’re using the money for it’s intended purpose would have to be examined on an individual basis - if the child was brought up in the way that he/she should go, they’ll make the right decisions.

My kids all get an allowance (pocket money). They have certain chores around the house they have to do to be able to get the money. I think teaching kids some responsibility when it comes to money is good. It (hopefully) will teach them about spending and saving. My kids are 7, 6 & 4 and that’s the amount of money they get each week. Obviously my 7 year old’s chores are a little bit harder than my 4 year olds. As for lunch money…you can’t let your child starve. The school that my boys go to has a lunch account for them. I deposit money into it and they have a pin number (just like a debit card) they use to pay for their lunch…personally I think this system is wonderful that way they can’t use their lunch money for other things and they don’t accidentally lose it.

I get £15 a week and for the £5 I do my dads lunch for 5days a week and the other £10 I have to do things around the house and help my mum with other cleaning around the house.

I also get money for lunch aswell. the pocket money I get I use to buy myself things when I go out with my friends.

I wasn’t bought up with money just given out like that, nor was my dad, or his dad, and nor will my children if I get my own way. I got taught to do certain jobs and for them I’d get a certain amount of money. I was to write what I’d done on a list to be given to my dad every Friday. This taught me money is not given out randomly in real life, & that you have to work for it.

Answer #5

I dont think it should just be given, I think they should earn pocket money. It teaches kids responisbility and the value of a dollar.

Answer #6

Pocket money / allowance is up to you but should be similar to what the majority of their peers are receiving.

However, if they are teenagers, they should ALWAYS have an emergency stash on them of maybe twenty dollars plus a couple quarters. Enough money to make a couple phone calls and take a cab home or to a hospital if necessary. The emergency stash is NEVER to be used for anything but an emergency.

Simply a Rose to brighten your day,         And maybe lessen the cares in your way;         And also, too, to help you to know,         That in knowing you, many others grow!

Answer #7

Well I guess it depends on your particular situation. I was never given pocket money. If I needed something, either they bought it or gave me enough money to get it, and then they got the change back… So is it necessary, probably not, but I guess some parents feel it is important to teach their child about money management and what not, and so they give their kid a set amount… If the kid then chooses to waste it, then they eventually learn their lesson… When it comes to lunch, well you’re not going to starve the kid…
