Do you have a financial advisor?

Does anyone have a financial advisor…I think it sounds like an awesome thing and I was wondering how many people are informed…

My father in law is a financial advisor, so I guess in a sense - I do have one, when I need it.

However, it’s very important to both my husband and I to make it on our own and learn from our mistakes. And we’ve made mistakes! We’ve gone through the “get 12 credit cards and go on a shopping spree” stage. We’ve done “eat out every night because we’re too tired to cook”

You name it - we’ve done it.

We also ended up filing for bankruptcy.

Now, we’re back on top of the game, re-establishing our credit and the bills get paid on time. We even have a little cushioning and it feels good. What feels the best though, is that we did it on our own without any assistance from a financial advisor. Perhaps he could have told us what we should be doing from the start - but we obviously were not ready to listen.

Financial advisors usually take a nice big cut for themselves.

If you have lots of money to invest and you don’t have any knowledge of risk and gain, then it makes sense to get some education in that area. And that education can come from many sources, often free.

I agree that most people are ill-informed about money, savings, banks, financial plans, retirement savings, life insurance, home ownership, investment certificates etc. but do be careful when you select “who” you will buy this information from.

As ichi above says, experience is often the best teacher.

In my opinion, home ownership is the best way to implement forced savings - especially with a shorter than normal amortization period, which means you’re paying more principal and less interest, and building up home equity quickly.
