Why were trenches used in world war 1?

I am doing a history test and I need to know why the trenches were used in world war 1? HELPP!

lol think if you were being shot at from every direction where would you go so you dont get your head blow off your shoulders(below the ground)and the trench was used so they could still shoot back and so when a tank came their way they could duck in the trench without getting their legs blown from under theml,I hope this helps :)

they where in belgium

for cover to get to other places wasnt it :S

they were about 10ft high so was compleatly shielded from small arms fire and most artilary… unless 1 went straight into the trench

They used trenches for rest, protection food talking to family re loading guns ect
