Why is four called in golf?

Golfer shout four when a golf ball is heading in the direction of people, I would like to know why this number is called

Answer #1

people call the word “four” just to warn other people that are golfing to get out of the way or they might get hit with the golf ball

Answer #2

mikeh is correct. That is the most accepted origination of the term.

Other possible origins include the term being derived from the term “fore-caddy” (caddy waiting down range from the golfer to find where the ball lands.)These caddies were often warned about oncoming golf balls by a shout “fore!”

Answer #3

It’s ‘’fore’’ they’re calling, not ‘’four.’’ It’s likely a shortened version of ‘’beware before,’’ but no one knows the etymology for sure. Its purpose is to warn players ahead of you that a golf ball is headed their way.

Answer #4

its a warning to watch your nut lol
