Why does it take hours and hours for my chihuahua to pee?

We just bought a chihuahua from a pet store, it has been 3 days since he has been home. We always have water available to him and he drinks throughout the day. It seems to take hours for him to pee. I don’t think he has peed in about 7hrs now and I am taking him out every hour and making sure he is drinking. We are having problems in potty training as it seems many chihuahuas do, so we are being patient. I am just concerned about many hours in between potties.

I have chihuahuas and all of the puppies I have had seems like they did not pee but I took them to the vet and they said that they do pee if you have carpet look for a quarter size wet spot they dont pee a lot till they are around 6-8 months old.

You should be concerned. It is not normal for your puppy not to urinate. Puppies eat, sleep, pee and poop. The majority (90%) of puppies purchased from pet stores are from puppy mills, no matter what the store tells you. Puppies from puppy mills tend to have many serious health issues. You should take your puppy to the Vet and NOT the one provided or recommended by the pet store. Have him completely checked out. And for the future…don’t buy from a pet store EVER…if you must buy a puppy go to a responsible breeder…one that has the partents at their home so that you can see the conditions and make sure the breeding is done for the right reasons…not just to make a buck. Better yet would be to adopt a puppy from a breed specific rescue or your local shelter. 1/4 of the dogs at shelters are purebreds.

Well I have a chihuahua. I normally take her out right before I go to school so like around 7:30 and then my dad takes her out around noon on his lunch break and then when I get home from school around 4. And then a few times here and there during the day.

Boy oh boy…I think this pup is too young for any type of stones or even to have a build up of crystals…BUT…there’s plenty to go wrong with a puppy’s pee-er genetically.

You must take this pup to the Vet, and tell them whats going on. They will test his urine…and they may ulta-sound his urinary tract for possible kinks and blockages…and to see if his kidneys are ok.

This is exactly the crap I’m talking about when people buy from Pet Stores…You pay an EXTRA high price when you purchase (usually a defective pup)…and then you can triple that initial cost, with the Vet bills that follow.
