why do the back of my calves hurt after riding a horse at a walk?

I was riding on a trail, on a shorter horse than my usual 17 hand retired racehorse, we only walked with a slow jog, in an english saddle, I didnt notice the pain until about 4 hours later when I was at home. I didnt do a lot of running but, I was walking, standing, and sitting at horse camp
