What's the idea behind daylight saving time?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. We dont have dst here in my country. What’s the idea behind it and what is this for?

Answer #1

that’s really interesting :D

Answer #2

The earths tilted at it’s axis’ so as the seasons change the daylight time is shortened in the winter and lengthened during the summer… so to make the day last longer, time is moved an hour back or forward twice a year.

Answer #3

but why do some countries need to make the day last longer/shorter? are there like advantages to it?

Answer #4

ok off the top of my head:

they go farward the last sunday in march by 1 hour and go back on the last sunday in october by 1 hour

we put them forward in march so come summer we get more daylight and less night.. I’ve seen it at times like 21:00 and its still not trying to get dark..

then come back to october we put them forward again and its pitch black come 16:00, sometimes @ 13:00 it starts to get dark…

and the times change at really daft times: I think its 2am we put them forward in march and 3am we put the back in october lol

or it might be vise versa… ill have to check that 1 cus im not 100%

I spose an advantage of putting them forward in summer would be you use less electric because it doesnt start getting dark till really late so you dont need your lights on as much

but then the disadvantage of butting them back is we use more electric cus its dark by 4pm

and if you havent got a auto set time and your forget to set them forward or back you can be a hour early or a hour late for work

I cant get why we do it..

its stupid if you ask me lol

Answer #5

hi clawjaw, do you mean, dst is used so that people can take advantage of having more sunlight during seasons with longer days than nights? Its an entirely new concept to me, I mean, you know, deliberately changing the time. Its pretty interesting though still vague for me. We dont have that here, hell, we dont even have snow. Maybe if I do get to experience it I shall understand. Thanks for your explanation :-) I was just really wondering about it.

Answer #6

Lol. It’s due to farmers. So that farmers would have longer hours to farm. This is from those days when there were lots of farmers and kids would work on the farms. There is no longer any reason do it. It’s stupid and annoying, but apparently it is hard to break from tradition.
