What are the stereotypes of British people from an American's point of view?

I don’t know, it’s been on my mind for a while now. All i know about the stereotypes are: Tea and crumpets, and bad teeth…

Answer #1

When I think of the British, I think of well mannered, sophisticated people, albeit with bad teeth, who are well versed in literature & have charming accents, haha. I think of British guys as being very suave & romantic (thanks to movies). The girls for the most part come off as haughty (again, thanks to movies!).

Then there are the other kinds of Brits who are very happy & say things like “Cheerio!” & “Balderdash!”

Answer #2

A stereotype my mom has tried to force into my head about the british is that they all are arrogant and pompous. Have bad teeth are ugly, and think they are better. I dont believe any of these though, i love their accents but thats basically my only opinion

Answer #3

Simply put? Austin Powers.

Answer #4

A stereotype one of my British friends have described is that they’re all extremely polite, the say words like “Cheerio”, they sit around drinking tea and eating scones and spend their whole day fox-hunting

Answer #5

I think of tea, buttered scones, and Oasis. Haha

Answer #6

LOL. You forgot “God save the queen”! :)

Answer #7

they love tea, have good grammar and like cricket. sry it’s in my point of view me not american lol

Answer #8

hahahahahaha these answers are soooo funny! Where does the bad teeth scenario come from? lol

Answer #9

Can’t people over there afford several sets of stereotypes for the British?

Where I come from, we have

  • one complete set of stereotypes for the Scottish and
  • another, completely different set for the English,
  • two for the Northern Irish (one catholic and one protestant) and
  • one for ppl from Wales and Cornwall (stereotypes for Wales and Cornwall are very similar… ).
Answer #10

im british and recently went to the states, had a great time, and everyone loved my accent.

Answer #11

I can assure you we dont say “Cheerio” and fox hunting is banned not that i would agree with it anyways :L , we do drink tea but not as often as everyone makes out and old people eat scones but not really with their tea i dont think

Answer #12

Apparently, we drink a lot of tea, wear suits, top hats and carry umbrellas as well as answering the phone by greeting the caller with ‘pip pip’. We like fox-hunting, Morris dancing. The British accent is supposed to be appealing to Americans.

Hmm.

Answer #13

lol. wow I’m british but I don’t drink tea or have bad teeth… I guess i talk normal too. I’ve never ever said Cheerio in my life. Hmm, I don’t think I actually have meet a british stereotype before. I am british by the way. :)
