Is it normal for a retainer to hurt at first?

I turned 16 and just got my retainer. Is is normal for it to irritate/hurt my teeth for the first little while?

Answer #1

I may hurt when you first put it in. The ice is a good idea, just don’t chew on it.

The more you wear it, the less it should hurt.

Answer #2

Yes it is.

I used to have a retainer. It took about 2-4 days for my mouth to get used to the shape of it. Suck on ice (don’t chew it) if your gums hurt. If it is still bugging you in a week, call the orthodontist, it may not be the right size/shape for you.

Good luck!

Answer #3

yes because your teeth are just starting to move into place!
