opinions on execution

What is your opinion on execution? And what is your opinion on the different forms of execution still around today in certain states in the U.S., such as lethal injection, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging, or firing squad? Do you think that some people deserve to die for their crimes, and if so what crimes do you think should be punishable by death?

I’m just really curious to see what other people think about this.

Answer #1

Capital punishment is entirely ineffective. Nearly everyone who has studied crime agrees that it does not serve as an effective deterrent. It is more expensive to execute someone than it is to imprison them for the rest of their life. Whether a convict receives the death penalty or life imprisonment depends far more on the quality of their defense than the seriousness of their crime. For the most part it is people who can’t afford a good lawyer who get the needle.

Care to show me the statistics? Because last time I checked, it’s easier to poison someone after a few months in prison with an injection that costs a few hundred dollars a dose(plus doctor’s bills, ect.) than it is to keep them in a prioson for 50+ years, providing food, medical care, sanitation, ect.

And along with that fact, capital punishment is not working because it is currently non-existent.

Answer #2

I dont think people should be sentenced to death, but I think if a person gets life in prison, they should be able to choose whether or not they want to die. a lot of them would probably choose to die and there would be more room in the prison- and I think lethal injection and firing squad are the best methods

Answer #3

this maybe a stupid question but what is firing squad??

Answer #4

filletofspam, tell me. if a criminal broke into your home and raped and killed a member of your family, what would you want to happen? you would want to kill them. which is exactly what they deserve.

you said , The only purpose that capital punishment serves is revenge. The purpose of our criminal justice system should be rehabilitation when possible and protecting society by segregation of criminals when it isn’t. Revenge should not be part of their job.

there is no rehab for a rapist and a killer, they have a sickness or a disease that pushes them to do such monstrous things. and some times for the good of society and for them as well, they have to be put down. I believe living is a privilige given to us by God. these people abuse life beyond words. capital punishment. death penalty. whatever you want to call it. I could care less how it happens whether it be the chair, injection, firing squad, or even a beating. as long as they get what they deserve. eye for and eye.

Answer #5

I think that if someone is sentenced to life without parole- beyond a shadow of a doubt- DNA evidence supported- they should be immediately walked out to the wall and HUMANELY SHOT.

we support keeping far too many criminals alive. once they have violated someone elses rights - they no longer have theirs.

it is a fact that gang related inmates continue to communicate and guide illegal activity outside the prison, this is something which should not be tolerated and should be put to a stop- if it is proven someone has been doing this- they should be walked out to the same wall and shot as well. our prisons are ending up being run by the inmates themselves- with the guards and wardens simply trying to maintain order. I have zero tolerance for violent criminals- prison should be a punishment- not a country club, if the population of violent murderers and rapists were put down for good, maybe prison would be able to rehabilitate those who have committed lesser crimes.

Pre-meditated murder, unless you’re certifiably proven ill PRIOR to the event. My definition of pre-meditated murder is essentially like setting up a play and making everything happen. If you are going to soon be in a situation that you feel or know you are likely to have to defend yourself, come prepared, and end up killing your antagonist, that’s a whole other story. There have been cases like that where they try to pin murder on it.

Treason, if it’s the type like shooting your superior officer in the back for disagreeing with his orders or handing a list of our foreign agents over to Al Quaeda, but it should be quick, firing squad.

And repeated sexual offenders. It is a statistic that 50% of sexual predators will commit such acts again once out of prison. If they can break away after the first set of prison time, great, but if they can’t, then there’s no stopping them. Most can’t stop themselves once they’ve started.

I think the penalty should be based on how torturous your act was. Lethal injection and firing squads for those who comitted murder in a quick, painless way(gun and other instantaneous killing techniques) . Gas chamber for people who killed relatively quickly, like stabbing, or snapping of neck. Electric chair for poisoning and other extremely painful killings. Hanging for rapists, because that is a most horrid torture, often more so if the victim lived.

daryl, a firing squad is an old execution technique were a group of soldiers line up and fire upon a criminal on command of an officer. people who committed treason were commonly sentenced to this death.

Answer #8

in the end, I think it is worth 5 million dollars to take monsters like murderers and rapists off this street one at a time. I know it seems inhumane but in my personal opinion rapists deserve an extremely slow and excrutiating death. they dont deserve rights after they rape and kill little children. after that they are no longer human, they are monsters.

Answer #9

Anyone who slaughters children and multiple murders should die by the same. Lethal injection, electrocution. Although their victims probably didn’t die quickly!! I am pro death penalty, and probably always will be. “An eye for an eye…

Answer #10

Wow, you sound like this dude I knew from the US Navy. Not that I disagree. Just that it won’t ever happen in our “sophisticated” and “evolved” society.

Answer #11

I’m against the death penalty because in my worldview the only justification for violence is defending yourself or others.

Capital punishment is entirely ineffective. Nearly everyone who has studied crime agrees that it does not serve as an effective deterrent. Whether a convict receives the death penalty or life imprisonment depends far more on the quality of their defense than the seriousness of their crime. Answer #12

I think in some cases the death penalty is over used. There is no possible way that we can understand someone’s motives when they are under such extreme emotional presure. The execution is just the means to punishment, not the punishment itself. We should look into all aspects and come up with the most humane way possible. I am not overly familiar with Filletofspams idea but it sounds like it would be the best way to go. Our current system is still being debated which we shouldnt use those methods when they are still under debate. I dont think its unresonable for the convict to request his manner of execution. A good project for liberals to work on.

Answer #13

It is against the TOU to post websites but if you google this I think you will find plenty of sites to corroborate my claim.

Capital punishment is expensive because in order to be sure the convict is guilty they are allowed to appeal their decision. In most cases convicts can not pay for their own lawyer so we end up paying for both sides. Because application of the death penalty is so arbitrary there is a Supreme Court review of each case. I read that it cost taxpayers $5 million to execute serial killer Ted Bundy.

Convicts sentenced to life in prison generally only appeal when they think they have some chance of being freed. Convicts sentenced to death will attempt every appeal and legal trick they and their lawyers can think of to delay their execution.

According to a 1990 Indiana study the cost to keep a prisoner in a maximum security prison for the rest of their life averaged about $1 million or about 1/3 the cost of execution there. In 1993 North Carolina spent $2.16 million per executed prisioner.

Answer #14

Funny thing is, you just used statistics from two different states three years apart. What was the cost in Indiana to execute in 1990? Or the cost in NC to hold the prisoner in 1993?

Answer #15

The most humane way of ending someone’s life would probably be nitrogen asphyxiation.

Humans sense hypoxia not from lack of oxygen but by the buildup of CO2. Someone breathing pure nitrogen doesn’t sense that they are asphyxiating since they would still exhale CO2. People who have died of nitrogen asphyxiation from going into nitrogen purged environments collapse without any warning or anticipation of hypoxia.

Other advantages of this method would be that nitrogen is not toxic (It simply lacks oxygen) so venting it afterword would pose no danger and it does not require medical professionals who have sworn to protect life to go against their Hippocratic oath.
