My son has been constipated since he was born he's 9 months old

He only has a “normal” poo once a week if we’re lucky. I’ve used all the medicines given to me by the doctor and they havnt worked. I’ve tried dark chocolate, fruit and he gets enough fibre in his diet. I’ve tried using vasaline on his bottom and that kinda works and it hurts him when I help him like that because his poo is really hard.

He is very miserable when he does want a poo and he is constantly straining and gets very upset with the pain. Hes constantly crying for no reason and im wondering if his tummy hurts.

Is he lactose and tollerant? What is this? What else can I try?

Answer #1

try juices like apple juice or even prune juice.

you can try a small small dose of castor oil. it is a liquid stimulant and he should poop in like 30 min.

try supositories.

mandarine oranges and juice always helps my daughter.

but I would try the castor oil but its no really for infants. its says for like 3 and up but the dose is like 2 teaspoons so a couple drops wont hurt a 9 month old

also iron makes you constipated too. so maybe too much iron or his formula may need to be cahnged. my daughter was the same way so I changed her formula and now she is wonderful . she is on the similac isomil soy milk for sensitive tummies.

Answer #3

My daughter is chronically constipated and I give her Miralax. She’s 7 so I give her 1 1/2 capfulls a day, but since your son is 9 months old then I would give him about 1/2 a capfull in whatever he is drinking a day.

Hi may have an enlarged colon. My baby brother has one and your son’s case sounds very similar. Mild laxatives, a diet with fibre and mineral oil (for lubrication, it’s taken orally) might help him. Good luck.

Answer #5

warm baths help, and massage with two fingers on both sides of his belly button to get muscles down there working, if this does not hurt him. Apple juice, Prune Juice or Pear works too.

Answer #7

this may seem weird…I know I thought it was weird when my daughter’s pediatrician told me… when you make his next bottle, mix in a a teaspoon of corn syrup. if it doesn’t help within 6 hours, do it again. it helped my daughter shortly after her 1st bottle w/ the corn syrup. good luck!
