What kind of solution is blood to the red blood cell?

Hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic? And why?

Answer #1

I think it should be isotonic - Animal cells generally try to maintain isotonic pressure, so there is an equal amount of fluid entering and leaving the cell. This prevents dehydration, and it also prevents the cell from bursting from too much pressure which would cause cell death. Animal cells do not have a cell wall, just a plasma membrane so they cannot withstand large amounts of pressure, unlike plant cells which have a strong cell wall made of cellulose. Plant cells like to be in hypotonic solutions so they can maintain turgor pressure which helps them keep their shape and survive in the face of environmental stress.

Thank you!

Answer #3

One more thing - blood isnt exactly the liquid which red blood cells are in. Blood is the combination of the plasma (fluid) and the cells in it, if that makes sense!
